A lot of courage is required to make the decision to initiate therapy for yourself or your child. I seek to create a safe place with clients, and to have a disarming and approachable demeanor. Counseling for children and adolescents can feel especially scary. I incorporate a variety of techniques to provide a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere to address hard feelings and topics. This includes play therapy, the use of art materials, music and psycho-educational activities. Play is the language of young children and the method they use to work out their feelings and problems.  I respect a child or adolescent's defenses and level of awareness. Play therapy provides the guidance and narrative children need to lower their defenses and bring resolution. Many clients come in the door struggling with crippling anxiety. Guided by current research in neuroscience, I emphasize the importance of breathing, relaxation, emotional regulation and cognitive behavioral therapy explained in a way kids or adults will understand. 

I received a B.S. in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University and completed my Masters in Social Work at the Jane Addams College of Social Work. My background includes over 25 years working In the public school setting dealing with disabilities and family issues that impact functioning. I appreciate the opportunity individual therapy provides to work more intensively with clients than is possible in the school setting.  I’ve also worked extensively helping adults manage anxiety, grief and loss, identity development, transitions and separation from family of origin. I bring a particular understanding to the complexities of having a family member with dementia.

I am a lover of nature and the chance to savor it on a walk or a bike, through creating beauty in a garden or with our dog.
